Sleight of Hand Poker Session at Hollywood Dog Track
Posted on February 15th, 2007 at 11:45 pm by admin

I decided to go to the Hollywood Dog Track with my friend Konstantin today because i like to pretend I’m a semi-pro poker player.

Earlier today I learned a sleight of hand magic trick which allows me to make Credit Cards, ID’s, playing cards disappear and reappear. It’s a very easy sleight of hand trick to learn.

So as I entered the Mardi Gras Casino in Hollywood Fl, I knew i was going to be carded so I had my ID in my hand ready.

Security: ID’s..
Preston: ID..Sure

(I present the ID to him at a side angle and with a quick shake of my hand and its gone. Then i make it reappear)

Preston: Here you go.
Security: Better becarful doing stuff like that, there going to throw you out or have to start watching you

(Security laughs)
(I laugh)
(We laugh)

I head towards the poker room and quickly sit down at my table with Konstantin. After a few hands into the poker session i take out the Ace of Clubs and just playing around with it. The poker dealer then asks me.

Poker Dealer Lady: Is that one of my cards?! (As she’s shuffling the deck for the next hand)

(I present the Card at a side angle and quickly make it disappear with my sleight of hand trick)

Preston: Card? What card?

Poker Dealer Lady: Very funny!

(Poker Dealer Lady laughs)
(I laugh)
(Table laughs)

Left around 11PM and up $128 dollars, Which is short of amazing for playing Texas Holdem $2 Straight

Toothpick Trick
Posted on February 15th, 2007 at 8:00 am by admin

I’m not that impressed with the toothpick trick, but it can become impressive if done under the right circumstances.

Effect:

The toothpick trick is a trick you may have seen Criss Angel perform. Toothpick trick is making a toothpick disappear and reappear from your hands.

Method:

Cut a piece of tape and place the toothpick on top of it. Place the taped toothpick on your thumb (taping the toothpick to your thumb).

Bend your thumb up and down to make the toothpick disappear and reappear.

Warning:

Since this is a really simple trick, people will catch on rather quickly.

Street Magic Lines To Help Your Magic Tricks
Posted on February 12th, 2007 at 8:00 am by admin

When doing street magic you should open each trick with a line to help your magic. It helps the spectator know it’s about time for them to be amazed; much like the Laugh Box telling people it’s time to laugh.

Here’s my Top 5 lines I like to use when doing Street Magic:

1, Let me show you something strange
2. I’m going to try something
3. I’ve never done this before
4. Can I try something with you?
5. I’m filming a street magic special

Ultimate Street Magic: Amazing Tricks for the Urban Magician
Posted on February 9th, 2007 at 1:00 am by admin

Ultimate Street Magic: Amazing Tricks for the Urban Magician is an ideal book for people just getting into magic or even to the experienced magician who wants to add a few tricks to his or her arsenal

The best thing about the book is the sheer variety of tricks included. Card tricks, levitation, money tricks, fire tricks, rubber band tricks, mentalist tricks and random other kinds or combinations of all of the above. All of them are tailored to working on the street.

A lot of it is fairly basic and anyone who has been involved in magic for awhile will be familar with many of the tricks but there are also quite a few new ones.

The instructions are fairly clear and are accompanied with actual photographs of the magician doing the trick step by step, which I much prefer over the small black and white sketches!

It’s a pretty good book, worth adding to any street magician’s library or anyone who wants a few new tricks to try out but i’ll also be discussing similar tricks on Street Magic Blog for free.

Here is some additional information on the book:

Book Title: Ultimate Street Magic: Amazing Tricks for the Urban Magician
Author: Gary Sumpter
Published: 2006
Synopsis On The Book Flap:
“These days magicians have to work hard to keep their public happy. The traditional figure on stage, in sweeping tailcoats and top hats, has gone, usurped by a cooler and edgier trickster taking up their own brand of magic to the streets.

In Street Magic, Gary Sumpter offers readers a wide range of tricks that will wow the public up-close and personal. From impressive effects involving everyday objects, such as coins and rubber bands to playing cards, he moves on to mind magic and stunning illusions to confuse the steel-willed and scare the strong of stomach, with useful tips and thoughtful advice throughout.

Whereever you go - pubs, clubs, markets, restaurants - Street Magic will give you everything you need to entertain, perplex and baffle audiences everywhere.”

David Blaine: Card Through Window Trick
Posted on February 8th, 2007 at 8:00 am by admin

Effect:

The performer asks the spectator to pick a card without him seeing the face and replace it in the pack. The pack is then shuffled and the performer is apparently unsuccesful in locating the card.

After a few attempts, the cards are thrown against a window in a fit of rage, on looking at the window, the chosen card is seen to be sticking to it, even more suprising is the fact that the card is on the inside of the window.

Preparation:

You will need two identical packs of cards and a willing helper.

Method:

This trick should be performed in an area with a large window nearby and with the spectator facing away from the window.

The spectator is asked to choose a card from a pack, memorise it and without showing you, replace the card in the pack.

The pack is then shuffled and a couple of attempts at “is this your card” tried followed by a look of disbelief when the spectator tells you that it is not their card ( this is al part of the act as you don’t even know the card).

After a few attempts you fake an angry outburt and making sure the cards are squard up, throw the pack broadside at the window, where they will hit the window and fal to the ground except the chosen card which is sticking to the window.

Your helper was already positioned behind the window and spectator and had an identical pack of cards. He was able to see the chosen card and took the duplicate from his pack.

A small peice of looped sticky tape ormagicians wax was attached to the duplicate card and it was stuck to the inisde of the window.

The helper should then have walked away from the window. This trick creates a real suprise but it is important to pick up the fallen cards quickly and to pocket the original chosen card.
